Dear Adults, Parents, or Babysitters, Cooking as a process is an excellent metaphor for living. In fact, there are programs in Juvenile Hall that teache adolescents cooking skills a metaphor for life skills. They learn to do things one at a time, they learn patience and follow through, they learn to take pride in their work and they learn to do it right or not at all. Aren't these some of the fundamental components of survival, growth and being a contributing person to society? You can share these skills through cooking with your kids. In addition, after a while, your kids will be a big help in getting dinner on the table. Here are a few tips:-Be
careful with the young ones when knives or the stove is being used.
-Don't get caught up in perfection. Make
sure they have the tools for success. For example, a stool for proper
height or a mouse pad under a bowl to hold it still while they mix.
-Avoid taking over. Especially when they say, "I can't do it." Resist
the urge to check up and give advice on how they can do it better because
this can feel very critical no matter what age of the child. Let them
fail and they'll ask why they failed and then your infinite wisdom will
be welcomed.
We hope you find cooking with your children to be a open door for communication, relationship building and fun.
